You may have noticed some construction happening at MidCity. That's because it is in the middle of a $300 million expansion!

Developer RCP Companies is calling the next phase the Arts + Innovation Subdistrict, a 12-acre stretch along Sanderson Road anchored by The Orion Amphitheater.

When it's finished, the area will add a 3,000-capacity indoor music venue called MidCity Live, two new hotels (including a 200-room music-branded property), a tech and innovation campus, and around 60,000 square feet of new retail and entertainment space.

The Camp is part of the shuffle too. It closed its old University Drive spot on July 4 and is set to reopen this October two blocks deeper into MidCity, in a bigger space next to the Artemis Pavilion.

As construction finishes up, new tenants are set to arrive later this year and into 2027. So far, that list includes Perry's Steakhouse and Grille, Hotel Indigo, Floriana, Maison Rose, Dragon Bao, GF Fitness, Barre3, and Maitland Conservatory.

It's a lot of change at once, but the payoff is a bigger MidCity with new places to eat, drink, and explore!

Downtown Huntsville has a new events space. Host by Homegrown just opened at 101 Washington Street, in the corner that used to house The Bottle, Chophouse, and Bubba's.

Ashley Ryals and Katiya McKinney (the team behind the Crush Wine Festival) built it as a home base for local makers, with a rotating calendar of chef dinners, live music, cocktail classes, and flower workshops.

Things kick off next month with an Artemis Songwriter Series show on September 2, an All Shook Up Craft Cocktail Class on September 3, and Southern Wagyu's Chef Series starting September 11. See the full calendar here.

Huntsville International Airport is breaking ground on a $57 million parking deck expansion.

When it's finished in about two years, the new six-story deck will sit west of the current one and add more than 1,400 spaces, bringing the airport's total to over 5,400. The entry plaza will also be reconfigured, with separate lanes for deck and surface parking to help traffic flow.

The upgrade comes as passenger traffic keeps hitting new highs. HSV moved 1.47 million passengers in 2023 and 1.63 million in 2024, both record years, and 2025 is running about 7 percent ahead of last year's pace.

As school gets back in session, the Huntsville Police Department is cracking down on speeding through school zones.

The Zero in the Zone campaign is back, starting August 5 and running through the 31. The initiative will put extra officers and safety patrol aides in school zones during the morning and afternoon rush to protect students as classes resume.

During last year's push, officers logged 249 traffic stops, with 234 citations and 72 warnings.

To stay off HPD's radar, they suggest slowing down near crosswalks, stopping fully for buses with arms extended (from both directions), skipping the parking-lot shortcuts, and putting your phone down.
