In January 1964, while NASA was racing to the moon, Huntsville announced plans for something equally ambitious: Space City USA.

The plan was a $5 million theme park on 850 acres around Lady Ann Lake between Huntsville and Decatur — the same land off Zierdt Road near I-565 that's now home to the Edgewater community. With Disneyland's success fresh and the Rocket City booming, the idea felt inevitable.

The plans were wild. Guests would pass through "time machine" domes into four lands:

Twenty-four rides in all, designed by a team that had worked on Disneyland itself.

Sadly, everything fell apart before it even got going. The opening slipped from 1965 to 1967, contractors sued over unpaid bills, and of the roughly $2 million raised from local investors, only about $500,000 went into actual construction.

What little had been built — an 1897 steam locomotive, a 60-horse carousel, the "time machine" domes, and even a "crooked house" — was auctioned off in October 1967.

Today, one of the few traces left is a small curved concrete sidewalk built for the Caveman Car Ride. You can find it tucked beside the Edgewater clubhouse.

Huntsville is throwing itself a nine-day space party. The inaugural Rocket City Space Fest runs July 16-24 at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, celebrating the city's space legacy on the anniversaries of Apollo 11's Lift-Off, Moon Landing, and Splashdown.

If you love good chicken, we’ve got some great news. Waldo’s Chicken & Beer is set to open its doors this August in the former Bruster's building in Jones Valley!

Founded in Nashville in 2019, Waldo’s menu features fried and rotisserie chicken served on the bone, in a bowl, on a bun, or in a basket. And every piece of fried chicken is cooked in 100% beef tallow!

They are also known for their cheddar biscuits and eight signature sauces!

We don’t have a firm opening date yet, but while you wait, you can see the menu here!

A new curated gift and lifestyle boutique called Maison Rose is coming to Huntsville's MidCity District this fall.

Behind it is Mia Muschek, a Madison native who moved back home to open the shop she wished had always been here. On the shelves, you'll find home goods, gifts, and artisan pieces with a European sensibility. The selection will rotate through the year, so there's always something new to browse.
