🍞 The Food Bank of North Alabama Is Doing More Than Ever

To kick off the meeting, Food Bank of North Alabama’s CEO Shirley Schofield presented on the Food Bank's recent work and future initiatives.

One of the Food Bank’s biggest recent challenges was responding to the government shutdown. During that time, they held their largest single-day distribution ever, serving more than 1,100 families.

In FY25 alone, the Food Bank distributed more than 5.5 million pounds of food in Huntsville. That equates to over 4.6 million meals, valued at more than $11 million, helping serve an estimated 56,980 food-insecure residents in Madison County. Over 40% of what they distributed was fresh produce.

Beyond emergency response, the Food Bank is also expanding long-term programs and partnerships across the city.

  • A new food pantry at their former Vernon Avenue location serving roughly 70 families per week

  • Ongoing investments in partner organizations with equipment and vehicles

  • A partnership with UAH's Neighborhood Nursing program to screen patients for food insecurity

  • Active efforts to expand summer school meal coverage, particularly on Huntsville's west side where access remains limited.
