  • A big presentation from Huntsville Hospital CEO Jeff Sams on the Crestwood acquisition

  • A new intercity passenger rail study approved

  • $2.3 million investment into affordable housing

  • The first steps toward creating TIF 9, a new tax financing district covering nearly 3,700 acres downtown

This is just a quick recap of an almost 4 hour meeting. If you’d like to watch the full thing, you can stream it here.

🚗 Old Monrovia Road Getting a Complete Street Redesign

The Council approved a contract with Rogers Group, Inc. for improvements to Old Monrovia Road between University Drive and Research Park's Corporate Drive, with construction expected to wrap by the end of the year.

The road was originally built almost 6 lanes wide to handle traffic to Madison Square Mall (which does not exist anymore), and now it's being narrowed down with on-street parking, protected bike lanes, pedestrian facilities, a multi-use path connecting to The Orion Amphitheater, and heavy landscaping.

It's the first phase of a longer-term complete street plan that will eventually connect downtown to UAH via Sanderson and Wynn Drive.

🏥 Huntsville Hospital Makes Its Case on the Crestwood Deal

This was by far the biggest item of the night. Jeff Sams, CEO of Huntsville Hospital, came in to walk the council through the $450 million acquisition of Crestwood Medical Center, answer public questions, and push back on concerns about monopoly pricing, wages, and transparency.
